Attracting Michigan's Spring Birds

Linda Strieff has been practicing the art of attracting our "feathered friends" since 1990. Come to the market on May 1 to hear how she does it. Demonstrations start at 10:00am.

Back in the spring of 1990 Linda saw bluebirds in her yard. She wanted to make sure they stayed. That's how she became interested in learning how to attract Michigan's birds. While discovering the best bluebird housing, she also discovered she had made too many bluebird houses and turned to the Owosso Farmers Market to sell her extras. Thus began her career of making and selling bird feeders and houses. Now, she makes and sells up to 25 styles at the market.

Soil Basics and an Introduction to Michigan Native Plants

Lynn and Tim Bugenske of BetterFinds in Saginaw will discuss soil basics & introduce you to your ‘neighbors’, Michigan’s Native Plants. Why are Michigan’s woods so fertile & diverse? Are there lessons to be learned from these untended gardens? Can you easily create specialized environments for your hard to grow favorites just by stabilizing available moisture & amending the soil? So join us that Saturday to learn soil basics & be introduced to native plants. And be sure to stock up on early produce that all too soon will be out of season! A selection of their spring blooming wildflowers will also be available for sale. Demonstration begins at 10:00am and is free.
More photos of native wildflowers can be seen in our Photo Gallery.

Charlie Keenan Chef at the Market "Thresers Dinner"

Charlie Keenan takes command of the cooking and grilling on August 14. The local “Michigan Outdoors” TV celebrity and wild game chef will be demonstrating cooking and grilling local food with a historical spin. Locally made sausage from Kolache Kitchen and locally grown vegetables from our vendors are the primary ingredients for Charlie's “Threshers Dinner”. The Threshers Dinner originates from the tradition of farmers banding together to get the harvest in from each others fields. This virtual army of farmers were fed hearty dinners by the host farm, in the open air, surrounded by all their neighbors. Originally the Threshers Dinners were cooked over wood fires and wood fired ovens as portrayed in artist Grant Woods 1934 painting titled “Dinner for Threshers”. Later they were sometimes cooked by the excess steam from steam threshing machines. Charlie recreates this neighborly atmosphere, open air feast, by preparing a traditional Threshers Dinner at the Owosso Farmers Market as an example of cooking you can do with local, fresh ingredients. Free samples while supplies last.
